A Tribute To My Dad

A nice tribute to a father with Alzheimer's.

Dad was very creative and a bit artisitic. His handwriting - even after he had Alzheimer's - was beautiful, and he enjoyed creating his own greeting cards for mother. I was told that before the war, he had been an accomplished musician, a violinist, but I never heard him play.

Family Illness

Family history plays a role in certain mental disorders, but not all. If you're concerned, see a doctor.

I wonder if my gran is getting Alzheimer's disease...you know, the one that ruins your brain cells until you reach the point where it no longer sends messages to the rest of your body causing organ failure and other disastorous things? The one where you forget your name, age, address, the fact that you have children, etc etc?

Is This All In My Mind?

Trying to diagnose a mental health problem is often a time consuming and frustrating process.

So it must be my mind, I thought! My mother was suffering with end-stage Alzheimer’s disease and the disease runs in my family. I decided to see a doctor. My doctor though it may be Alzheimer’s also, and he put me on Alzheimer’s medicine to see if it would help. (It didn’t.) I was scheduled for psychological tests to determine if the problem could be Alzheimer’s, or Adult Attention Deficit Disorder, or a Learning Disability.

Mom

Great story about acknowledging, with honoring a mother's mental illness.

There hasn't been an official diagnosis, but basically my mom has a form of dementia (like Alzheimer's disease) -- but she just turned 55 in March.

Testing For Alzheimer's Genes

Click through for full post on Alzheimer's testing.

Study participants were divided into two groups; both groups were assessed for risk of Alzheimer's based on the usual risk factors, but only one group was told their APOE genotype. Instead of a higher level of anxiety and depression in the group that was given information on their APOE genotype, researchers found no significant difference in negative feelings between the two groups.
